Route A additive layout — new header_layout option, stock paths untouched | logo-left-menu-inline renders the nav inline inside the .header__top grid (logo · nav · search · icons); all three stock layouts byte-inert | live |
| Master checkbox for instant revert | rs_enable_compact_single_row (default off). Unticked live at 23:54 → stock two-row returned exactly; re-ticked → compact returned. Cold backup also on disk | proven |
| Collapse-on-scroll OFF — no desktop hamburger | data-collapse-on-scroll forced false in compact; sticky scroll-up pins the full row with the nav exposed | live |
| Search = compact field, icon one switch away | 190px field in the row; rs_compact_search_style select flips to icon-only instantly (icon expands over the nav on focus). Results overlay spans full viewport | live |
| Utility links stay in topbar | Topbar untouched — About / Contact / Become a Dealer / Dealer Login as before | live |
| "Dropdowns must not float strangely" | Panels re-anchored to the row bottom with both stock compensation paddings zeroed. Measured: panel top y=203 vs row bottom 204. Nested flyouts untouched | measured |
Bonus: the compact header fixed a live stock bug — the old two-row header was clipping the Kitchen & Dining dropdown ("Cookware & Bakeware" never rendered). All 6 children now visible.
backups/2026-07-22-compact-header-prechange/.CODEX_TASK.md) — 6 files in scope, header-group.json forbidden.scripts/push_compact_header.py — --inert / --activate / --revert / --status), settings group backed up before each write.| # | Claim | Verdict | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| F1 | Forbidden header-group.json modified | refuted | Worktree copy == live; --inert never pushes it — activation is the separate API step by design |
| F2 | Compact CSS not loaded on some templates | refuted | rs-soft-modern.css loads globally from theme.liquid:96 (blocking) — present on every template |
| F3 | Default-off branch not byte-identical (trim markers) | fixed | Non-trimming tags used; documented that strict byte-identity is impossible in Liquid — standard = CSS/DOM identity, verified |
| F4 | Dropdown compensation padding not zeroed | fixed — the big one | The reviewer caught that my own review fix had removed Codex's padding-zeroing. Without it, narrow dropdowns would have floated exactly one nav-height low — precisely your "float strangely" fear. Restored + measured flush |
| F5 | Icon search dead when recommendations empty / JS absent | fixed | Expansion now also keyed to .header__search:focus-within — works without body.search-open |
| F6 | Separator line only under the nav cell | fixed | Separator + scroll shadow moved to the full row |
rs_hide_account gate + ~540 lines of July homepage CSS) existed only uncommitted in the working tree. Pushing the worktree files briefly erased them live — "Sign in / Register" appeared in the header and homepage styling broke.Repair (from the cold backup, within minutes): rs-soft-modern.css rebuilt as the live backup base + the compact block appended (July markers + button-hover fix verified present); header.liquid rebuilt by applying the reviewed git patch onto the live backup base (rs_hide_account restored, all 9 compact refs intact); hide-account/cart flags re-asserted in settings. Full site re-verified after.
Root cause closed: the repo is now committed in sync with live truth (f6ec0aa8), and the rule is logged in PROJECT.md — worktrees check out HEAD; live truth must be committed before any worktree-based push. The pre-change backup protocol is what made this a 10-minute repair instead of a disaster.
